The cone

This piece is a representative video titled “The Cone.” As I mentioned before, the sugar cone plays a considerable role in Iranian wedding ceremonies. In addition to the sugar cone-breaking ceremony, my father would always sit on the floor and break the cones to make sugar cubes for our tea. I used this tradition as a metaphor to reflect on the cultural breakdown and the sexual violence that occurs in Iran, specifically on myself. In this video, I sat down on the floor, crossed legs, wearing a black veil and dress while holding a hammer to break the cone. By hitting on the sugar cone, I illustrate every oppression against Iranian women, and as the video goes on, I will hit harder and harder on the sugar cone. My memory of what had happened to me when I was performing led me to hit harder and break the sugar cone at the end of the performance.
